Courtesans Playing Music

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting a group of courtesans enjoying an afternoon of music and other pastimes. In the center, a seated woman plays a shamisen while two young women engage in a mock sword battle using folding fans. At right, a servant carries in a koto wrapped in a cloth case. Below, a beauty smokes a slender pipe as she chats with a companion, a young girl kneeling on the floor next to her. The elegant mansion extends into other rooms reaches by arched bridges, looking out onto a view of the water framed by blossoming cherry trees. An ornate lantern adorned with tassels hangs overhead. Beautiful color and wonderful detail in this attractive scene, including embossing in the white kimono trim.
