Karakoto of the Chojiya, Kamuro Ageha and Yayoi, circa 1805

Comments - Beautiful portrait of the courtesan Karakoto of the Chojiya with one of her kamuro or child apprentices. She wears a black outer kimono trimmed with an embossed checked border over a red under robe with a large rope pattern, tied with a brocade obi featuring a large sacred jewel surrounded by flames. She smiles happily as she looks back over her shoulder, showing tiny even white teeth. Her hair is pulled back into a sleek bun adorned with a comb, several hairpins, and ribbons. Her young attendant waits at her side, wearing a cherry blossom print kimono, clusters of delicate flowers decorating her hair. A classic Utamaro beauty subject and a lovely choice for the discerning collector.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 10 1/4" x 14 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some toning and soiling in subject as shown. A light horizontal crease at center. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
