Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Naval Battle

Comments - Dramatic scene of a naval battle with two ships sinking beneath the choppy waves. Clouds of smoke pour from the vessel at center, with flashes of red light from an explosion. The ship flies a flag with horizontal red, white, and blue stripes. Other ships can be seen steaming away at left, and the dark sky creates an ominous atmosphere. Two oval insets features portraits of generals. An interesting and unusual triptych, nicely detailed with fine bokashi shading an a dusting of mica.
