Both Banks of the Sumida River (Ehon Sumidagawa Ryogan Ichiran), circa 1805

Both Banks of the Sumida River - Terrific design from Hokusai's illustrated book "Both Banks of the Sumida River." In these lovely images, Hokusai offers a panoramic view of life in Edo along the Sumida River, showcasing the waterfront in different seasons and weather. Travelers cross the water in ferries, stroll along the shops lining the bank, and traverse the many bridges over the river. The scenes are created to form a continuous image of the riverbank from one diptych to the next, moving from Edo Bay at New Year's Day to the Yoshiwara pleasure district at year's end. Beautifully detailed with expressive figures and attractive scenery, this work is considered a "tour de force" among Hokusai's many illustrated books. A great choice for a collector.
