Series; Stories of Famous Japanese Women

Stories of Famous Japanese Women - In 1893, Chikanobu began work on a series of diptychs depicting scenes from the lives of famous Japanese women. His "Stories of Famous Japanese Women" included women from various time periods as well as mythological heroines, highlighting their dramatic deeds or personal virtues. These intriguing subjects are beautifully drawn with Chikanobu's characteristic fine line work, and lovely soft shading. A rare and wonderful series and a great choice for a collector.

Women Warriors Aiding the 47 Ronin - Terrific scene of two women warriors assisting in the fight of the 47 ronin at Moronao's palace. The beauties rush forward, each armed with a naginata, ready to do battle. Their sleeves are tied out of the way with sashes, and each has a white headband. At left, the young Oboshi Rikiya, son of the leader Oboshi Yuranosuke, draws back his sword as he faces a resident of the palace. His battle helmet hangs at his back, the fluttering red cape emblazoned with the inverted comma crest of his family. Another ronin grips his weapon overhead with both hands at left. An unusual and interesting treatment of this classic battle, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black robes and weapon handles, and embossing in the white kimono trim.
