Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a confrontation at a tea stand. In the center, a samurai in a blue coat leans forward aggressively, gripping the hilt of his sword as he frowns at a commoner sprawled on the ground. The commoner grimaces back at him, an overturned bench and a wicker box on the ground nearby with a robe falling out of it. At right, a beauty watches with a smile, holding the hand of a young boy at her side. She seems unaware of any conflict between the men. Bundles rest on the bench behind her beneath a spreading tree, and a reed mat leans against the tea stand at left where rows of cups are arranged on the shelves of a cupboard. The actor in the left panel is Ichikawa Kodanji, and the actor in the center is Kawarazaki Gonjuro. An interesting subject with a nicely detailed setting, including shading in the night sky.
