Couple and Jealous Man, 1840

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Kaeri bana yuki no Takeda," a tale about the samurai Endo Musha Morito, who became obsessed with the beautiful Kesa Gozen. The happily married woman rejected his advances, but Endo persisted in pursuing her. Finally, afraid that he might harm her husband, Kesa convinced him to murder her husband one night. She then cut off her hair, and took her husband's place in bed, and Endo murdered her by mistake. Here, the beauty stands in the boat at left, smiling down at her husband Watanabe Wataru as he leans over the edge to wash his hands in the water. Endo hunches over a fire on his raft at right, scowling jealously as he stares at the beauty. Bats dart across the night sky above. From left, the actors are Iwai Shijaku I as Kesa Gozen, Sawamura Tossho I as Watanabe Wataru, and Ichikawa Ebizo V as Endo Musha Morito. A great design with expressive figures and attractive detail.
