Comments - Incredible Yoshitoshi scene from the 1583 Battle of Shizugamine where Hideyoshi Toyotomi defeated his rivals to succeed his former master Oda Nobunaga. Hideyoshi appears on horseback in the center gripping a pole arm, staring fiercely over his shoulder. He wears a fine suit of armor and a horned battle helmet, his red and white vest fluttering above his back. At lower right, one of his men affixes the severed heads of the enemy to a cluster of bamboo poles, creating a gruesome war trophy like that carried by two other men, the poles bending under the weight of their gory ornaments. Craggy mountains surround a deep blue lake, the peaks rising against a dark night sky. A fantastic depiction of the realities of battle, with wonderful detail in the armor, weapons, and realistic facial expressions. A great Yoshitoshi samurai subject.
