Traveler Dreaming, 1854

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a traveler stopping for a break, daydreaming as he rests his chin on his hand. He sits inside the doorway of a small roadside shrine, still wearing his coat with his bundle and hat on the floor beside him. The dream is depicted in a cloud at left, which shows a nobleman riding a dappled horse being led by a samurai across a stream. The noblemen smiles as he admires the colorful maple leaves and two butterflies fluttering overhead, while a beauty holds a small wooden tub of laundry as she kneels on the bank. An intriguing scene with lovely color and detail, including soft shading in the water and sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 20" + margins as shown

Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
