Sukeroku, 1862

Comments - Handsome triptych from the kabuki play commonly known as "Sukeroku" showing the young street knight, Sukeroku, who is actually one of the Soga Brothers in disguise, confronting the elderly samurai Ikyu in the Yoshiwara one night. The object of the dispute is the lovely courtesan Agemaki, with whom both are in love. She stands between the men, smiling at Ikyu, dressed in an elegant blue outer robe patterned peonies and a bridge over a rushing river, tied with a fantastic red obi featuring a snarling lion. Sukeroku frowns unhappily as he pushes up his sleeve, wearing a black kimono over a red under robe, a sash tied rakishly around his forehead. Ikyu grimaces angrily at the beauty, dressed in a fancy green robe with a dragon design, clutching his flowing white beard. Kawarazaki Gonjuro plays Sukeroku. Beautiful color and detail in the elegant fabrics, with embossing in the white hair and beard. An attractive illustration from this popular drama.
