Genji and Eavesdropping Courtesan, 1865

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji in an elegant mansion, with a courtesan eavesdropping from behind a folding screen at right. She wears a lovely outer kimono shaded from rose to blue, patterned with birds in flight above crashing waves. She tilts her head down as she listens, looking out of the corners of her eyes, a pile of bedding on the floor behind her. Genji smiles as he chats with a beauty kneeling behind him. He carries a sword and wears a blue kimono with a white inset with circular motifs, which matches the coat the beauty has draped over her shoulder. The verandah opens onto a blue sky framed by pink and white cherry blossoms, and a sumptuous floral kimono hangs over a stand at left. A beautiful image with attractive color and detail, including embossing in the white kimono inset and trim.
