Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Antique Meiji era shunga - ca. 1900

Comments - This exciting series of shunga depicts lovers of all professions and walks of life, shown in intimate moments. This fascinating shunga dates to the Meiji era, ca. 1900, when western clothing and architectural styles coexisted alongside that traditional styles of Japan. These prints are of particular interest for a shunga collector as they were some of the last shunga images produced in Japan. As Japan was increasingly influenced by the West, shunga could no longer compete with photographic erotica and production of shunga abruptly declined. The prominence of westernized styles and clothing foreshadowed the approaching end of the art form.
