Kumagai and Yoshitsune, 1851

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait from the classic play "Ichi-no-tani Futaba Gunki." In the foreground, Nakamura Utaemon appears as the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Jiro Naozane, with another actor as Yoshitsune standing behind him. When General Kumagai is faced with the prospect of killing the Emperor's bastard son Atsumori during the Battle of Ichi-no-tani, he instead sacrifices his own child to repay a debt of honor. He clenches a folding fan between his teeth as he grimaces with emotion. Yoshitsune looks to the side with a sorrowful expression, wearing a beautiful brocade robe over a fine suit of armor, a white sash with the paulownia crest of the Minamoto Clan tied around his head. Nice large expressive figures with bold patterning in the elegant fabrics.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 14 1/4"
