Series; Bairei's Album of Flowers and Birds

Bairei's Album of Flowers and Birds - This lovely print comes from Bairei's series "Album of Flowers and Birds," first published in 1883. Considered by many his best work, this beautiful series features birds paired with flowers for each of the four seasons. Depicted in their natural habitat or perched on striking floral arrangements, the birds are carefully observed and beautifully drawn with a wonderful attention to detail, as are the flowers and plants. Handsome choices for display, these attractive woodblocksare a fine choice for a bird or flower enthusiast.

Kono Bairei - Born in Kyoto in 1844, Kono Bairei studied classical Japanese painting with masters of several different schools. He helped found the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and later opened his own studio, earning recognition as a devoted teacher. Bairei applied his naturalistic style of painting to woodblock prints during the Meiji era, producing the lovely kacho-e or birds and flowers prints for which he is famed.
