Wandering Monks Pillar Print

Goyo Studio Reprints - Hashiguchi Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e designs from the golden age of the Japanese woodblock print. Between 1918 and 1920, much of Goyo’s artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints of classic ukiyo-e prints. Each image was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo circular seal. Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo’s studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim.

Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and rare to find. This is an exceptional opportunity!

Comments - Attractive pillar print design featuring a young couple dressed as komuso or wandering Buddhist monks. They each carry a woven basket hat to symbolize detachment from the world, and wear a traditional monk's mantle over their kimono. The beauty looks down with a pensive expressive, holding a shakuhachi flute in her hand. A willow and a plum tree with delicate pink blossoms frame the scene overhead. Nicely detailed and colored.
