Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nihonbashi Bridge and Edobashi Bridge
Series; Forty-eight Selected Views of Edo, 1891
Forty-eight Selected Views of Edo - Not much is known or published about this unusual and rare series, "Forty-eight Selected Views of Edo," which features some of the finest designs from Hiroshige's original "One Hundred Views of Edo" series. Published in 1891 by Kodama Matashichi, the series includes striking prints produced with the original blocks, and in some cases, the addition of new blocks. This memorial series includes some of Hiroshige's most memorable images, many of which are now hard to find from the original edition. Beautifully detailed with soft shading and fine line work, prints from the "Selected Views" are a great opportunity to acquire these classic Hiroshige subjects.
Nihonbashi Bridge and Edobashi Bridge - An innovative and excellent design from the series displaying some of the unique design characteristics of the 100 Edo series. In the foreground, the viewer is on the Nihonbashi Bridge with a bucket of fish belonging to the fish peddler, visible in the lower right. Over the broad expanse beyond the bridge, rooftops of the city in this prosperous area stretch out to the horizon. The sun is rising in the distance on this balmy summer morning. An excellent design.
