Commoner Scratching His Head

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of a commoner scratching his head as he frowns. He wears a boldly patterned blue and gray kimono with a black collar, a dotted towel draped over his shoulder. His thinning hair is pulled back into a side knot, and his ear is visible beneath the hair at the side. The background is filled with oversize chrysanthemums and leaves against a blue sky, creating a striking backdrop for the figure. A handsome composition with fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. A few small thinning spots at top edge, repaired, blends well. Creasing, slight soiling, slight fraying at bottom edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
