Comments - Fantastic scene from the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men attacked the castle from the mountains above, rushing down the steep hill of Hiyodorigoe to mount the surprise assault. Here, Yoshitsune stands atop a rocky outcropping, gesturing with his fan as flames rise from the fortress below where other Minamoto troops are attacking by water and land. The loyal warrior monk Benkei watches at right, leaning heavily against his heavy iron club. His red and white personal standard bearing a Buddhist prayer wheel flutters above his back. A dramatic image with wonderful detail in the expressive figures and armor, and a terrific natural setting. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast.
