Historical Site of Sano at Itahana: Onoe Shinshichi III as Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo - Terrific kabuki portrait of Onoe Shinshichi III as the samurai Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo. He looks over his shoulder with a scowl, holding a cylindrical box of the type used to hold the severed heads of enemies for identification. He wears an elegant robe over a fine suit of armor, with a spiky straw collar tied around his neck. His thick hair is pulled back into a bushy topknot, with a white sash tied around his forehead. The mountainous landscape behind the figure shows the site of Sano at Itahana under a dark sky as evening falls. A fantastic, bold design, beautifully composed and colored. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 7/8" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. A light horizontal crease at center. Some faint soiling at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
