Confrontation at the Seaside, 1860

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a couple confronting a young man holding an ema or votive plaque in his outstretched hand. He stands on a straw mat under which the pair has each thrust a sword, scowling down at the beauty. She looks up at him with a rather alarmed expression, frowning with dismay. The samurai at right regards the young man intently, his free hand flung out to the side. Behind them, a small shrine labeled Koshin-do stands under a willow tree along the water's edge, with undulating water disappearing into the distance. The actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I playing the roles of Ojo Kichisa, Osho Kichisa, and Obo Kichisa in the drama "Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai." An interesting subject with a nicely detailed setting.
