Princess Wakana and Giant Spider, 1853

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene from the play "Shiranui Monogatari" of three warriors battling a giant spider conjured up by the Princess Wakana. The beauty stands at left, reading a magic spell from a scroll, looking back at the samurai defiantly. Armed with swords, Washizu Rokuro, Washizu Shichiro, and Genkai Nadaemontake on the monstrous creature, its eyes glowing yellow and fangs hanging out of its mouth. At right, Genkai Nadaemontake wears a beautiful outer robe patterned with clouds, the black areas burnished with a geometric pattern, over a dragon print kimono and armor. He appears distraught, frowning and gripping his weapon with both hands. The actors are Bando Shuka I as Wakana Joko no henshi, Arashi Rikaku II as Washizu Rokuro, Bando Takesaburo I as Washizu Shichiro, and Arashi Rikan III as Genkai Nadaemon. A terrific supernatural image with fantastic color and detail, including embossing in the white kimono trim.
