Ono no Komachi Writing a Poem, 1891

Comments - Beautiful triptych depicting the famous ninth-century poet Ono no Komachi standing on a verandah with a poem slip and brush in hand. She looks out over the pond and garden dotted with flowering cherry trees, composing a verse about the view. A young attendant kneels beside her holding a tray with an ink stone on it, while another girl leans over the verandah railing. Court ladies wearing white kimono tucked into red hakama pants kneel nearby, while other can be seen carrying in offering trays laden with sweets at left. Beautifully colored and detailed with embossing in the white kimono and touches of burnishing. An exquisite scene from courtly life that would make a wonderful framed presentation.
