Series; Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan

Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan - Yoshitoshi's late series "Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan" highlights important figures throughout the history of Imperial Japan, from both legend and real life. These terrific images include valiant samurai, brave retainers, loyal wives, and fantastic demons. Beautifully drawn with a wonderful sense of realism and finely printed with rich jewel-tone colors, these designs are a great example of Yoshitoshi's mature artistic style. A great choice for a Yoshitoshi collector.

Sugawara no Michizane Evoking a Thunderstorm - Fantastic image of Sugawara no Michizane, a poet and cabinet minister during the Heian era. In 901 a rival accused him of treason, and Emperor Daigo exiled him to an administrative post in Kyushu. After his death, a series of disasters and epidemics struck the capital, which was attributed to his angry ghost seeking revenge. To appease him, a shrine was built and he was worshipped as the god Tenman Tenjin, originally associated with thunder and agriculture. He is shown here standing on the rugged Mt. Tenpai, calling forth the thunder to avenge his honor as orange lightening zigzags across the sky and wind blows his hair and robes. A terrific print from this fascinating series with a beautiful burnished pattern in the black robe and embossing in the white sash fluttering around his feet.
