Elderly Warrior Ikyu, 1860

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of the elderly warrior Ikyu from the tale of Sukeroku. Both Ikyu and his rival, the young street knight Sukeroku, are in love with the famous courtesan Agemaki. He grimaces angrily, gripping his sword beneath the voluminous sleeve of his cloud patterned coat. His long white hair and beard flow over his shoulders and chest, the hair delicately embossed. The samurai creates an imposing figure against he blue evening sky, framed by a flowering cherry tree. A handsome image with soft shading and a dusting of mica in the sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 7/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Small losses at left corners, a few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling and creasing, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
