Comments - Terrific illustration from the popular kabuki play "Sukeroku" showing the young street knight, Sukeroku, who is actually one of the Soga Brothers in disguise, confronting the elderly samurai Ikyu. The elder wears an impressive kimono patterned with rooster, his long white hair flowing over his shoulders. The street knight wears a simple black kimono over a pale blue under robe, a purple sash tied rakishly around his forehead. He is armed with a single sword and has a shakuhachi flute tucked in the back of his obi, holding an umbrella high. The object of the dispute is the lovely courtesan Agemaki, with whom both are in love. She stands at center smiling sweetly, a roll of tissues in her hand. Her black kimono features a striking design of a carp leaping up a waterfall, tied with a peony patterned obi. The actors are Kawarazaki Gannosuke as Sukeroku, Iwai Hanshiro, [?], and Nakaro Nakazo as Ikyu. Great embossed detail in the old man's white hair and beard, with burnishing in the black robe. A handsome design with large figures and lively color, bordered with a simulated red lacquer frame.
