Original Ohara Shoson (1877 - 1945) Japanese Woodblock Print
Flying Eagle, 1933

Ohara Shoson - Known primarily for his kacho-e (bird and flower subjects), Shoson produced enormous numbers of nature prints in the early 20th century. Early in his life, he studied painting at the Shijo School under the artist Susuki Kason. When Watanabe reopened after the devastating 1923 earthquake, he recruited Japan’s premiere artists. Watanabe began publishing Shoson’s prints in 1926. Brighter and more vibrant than his earlier prints, Shoson’s work found their first foothold in the United States.

Comments - This fantastic image of the flying eagle is a Shoson masterpiece. The eagle is gliding in a dramatic pose, snow in the background and on the pine trees below. This image is thought to be inspired by Hiroshige’s famous print of an eagle in flight, a Hiroshige masterwork from his 100 Edo series.

Signed - Shoson with red artist’s seal
Sealed - Publisher Watanabe, 7mm seal, later edition from original blocks
Image size - 9 1/4" x 14 1/4" (oban tate-e)
Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. This print has never been mounted and has full margins. Please see photos for details. Excellent overall with no issues to report.
